Right Care, Right Time

Demand for GP appointments is rising annually with doctors busier than ever, working hard to ensure their patients get the high standard of service they deserve.

But with this ever increasing pressure, the NHS recognises that it needs to find new ways to make sure patients continue to get the right help as quickly as possible.

It’s accepted that sometimes a doctor or nurse isn’t the best person for a patient to see.

For instance, if a person has hurt their shoulder or knee wouldn’t it be a lot easier and quicker if they could just go straight to a physiotherapist rather than having to be referred to one by a GP?

Or it could be that someone needs support to stop smoking or lose weight so wouldn’t it be great if they could directly access the right service instead of needing a referral.

Well, under this new approach, that’s exactly what could happen.

Currently GP reception staff are undergoing extensive training on what services, including newly created ones, are available. Some will be within their practice but others are out in the community and, where able, staff will help patients get booked in directly with the right specialist service.

As well as physiotherapists, there’ll be opticians and pharmacists for you to see plus a range of other professionals to offer things like support for carers, lifestyle change and those who need some emotional support.

Patients will also be able to directly access help and support if they have problems with drugs or alcohol.

Not only will this mean you get the right help quicker, it also means that when you do need to see a GP it should be easier to get an appointment.

So next time you have health issue speak to your practice receptionist and see if you can get the help you need without having to see your doctor first.

Of course if you’d prefer to see your doctor, you can still do that without any problem.
